So, Monday 14th September, 2009 – finally got around to putting a website for the OES TSETNOC competition together.
So, what does stage 1 consist of?
Well, this one is a bit different to usual website creation/SEO project as the keyword research cannot really be done as OES TSETNOC isn’t a real word and up to now, no search volume, no related keywords. So ermm yeah, toughy. I mean, sure, people rant on about “you need links” blah, blah, blah, then the other side of the coin, you get the “content is king” crew. Well I’m piggy in the middle! Let me explain…
The link building school of thought; once upon a time, you could have a brand spanking new website with little to NO content on it, but by getting large amounts of links with the selected keywords as anchor text, you could rank and easily. But what’s the point in ranking for something if your content is crap? Either way, the pesky lil SEO spammers still find good revenue from persuing a 99% link building SEO strategy, so let’s leave them to it.
The content is king school of thought; Firstly, I AGREE, content is king and for so many reasons. But this content needs to be, where possible – totally different to what is already on the web, interesting, thought provoking and most importantly of all, providing the searcher with the content they required from search for keyword “X”.
HOWEVER, sure… you have people like MASHABLE or TECHCRUNCH where they tick all of the above boxes, THUS THEY GENERATE ORGANIC INBOUND LINKS. But what about if you have a website, that serves its purpose and with new content that isn’t copied from anyone else in any shape or form, but the subject/topic matter isn’t exactly ‘amazing link bait’, thus not generating organic links.
… and that, ladies and gentlemen sums me up for why I sit in the middle of the ‘content is king’ VS ‘links rule all!’ – one side of the SEO coin cannot survive without the other… or… well, it CAN, but your full SEO potential (which I know I keep banging on about) just will not be met.
So I say to this to the ‘Links rule all’ people; Nice, you’ve upt your link popularity status, now ease off on the link building activities (take it from being promary focus) and concertrate on creating X amount of articles per week, for the next month – then come back here and tell me to my face that you haven’t seen a positive impact, because I won’t believe you!
And to the ‘content is king crowd’, congratulations firstly, you are probably a non-SEO-Cowboy, but hey, why not get in a routine of putting a side X amount of time per week to just sit down and focus on building links? Again, come back in a month and tell me it hasn’t worked. Or more to the point, say thanks!
… oh wow, just realised I had a major digression there!
So, what was day 1 like for me with this site?
- Purchased domain name
- Mapped out website structure
- Delved in to my trusty selection of Wordpress plugins (I have some beautiful plugins! – I shall share in a post in the future)
- Type some content up (pages) and thinkĀ of ideas on what these pages can be about! OES TSETNOC, possibly? Haha!

That was where I got stuck at first – trying to think up a variety of posting ideas for the site past a description of the contest. It’s all good once you choose a “theme” for the site and just go from there.
